AVIA 078 - Introduction to Aviation Management

SJSU Aviation's AVIA 078 provides students with a history of aviation management. It focuses on safety, security, community relations. Students learn the historical and current state of the United State's airspace system, the future of the airspace system, and that of international airspace systems.

AVIA 128 - Aviation Safety and Security

Safety in aviation design, operation, and maintenance; hazardous materials; airport environment issues; security regulations for aviation.

AVIA 141 - Human Factors in the Aviation Environment

Effects of time zone changes, sleep disruption, drugs on pilot performance. Role of FAA inspectors, physicians, cabin attendants, unions. Cockpit crew coordination; pilot psychology; aviation safety and accident investigation. Experimental avionics. Prerequisite: Sophomore or Upper division standing. Notes: Not an elective in most department majors.

AVIA 173 - Aviation Law

Law and legal issues in aviation from both a national and international perspective. Rights and responsibilities of individuals, organizations, and the aviation community. Regulations and liability pertaining to the design, manufacture, operation and maintenance of aircraft.

AVIA 002 - Private Pilot Ground

This is the SJSU Aviation program's ground school for private pilots.

Foundational concepts of aviation studies for professional pilots. Ground course for private pilot FAA certification. Aeronautics basics, weather, visual navigation, regulations, and operational environment for conducting flights under visual flight rules. Pre/Co-requisite: AVIA 001

AVIA 003 - Introduction to Private Pilot Part 141 Flight

Taken in conjunction with AVIA 002, this course focuses on the flying aspect of private pilot flight training.

This course covers the FAA requirements leading up to the award of the FAA Private Pilot Certificate. The course consists of flight training segments in an FAA-approved FAR part 141 flight training program. Prerequisite: AVIA 002

AVIA 031 - Aircraft Theory and Design

Aerodynamics and aeroelastics force. Load analysis of flight vehicles. Aircraft design optimization, material selection along with, safe-life, fail-safe and damage tolerance in design. Prerequisite: AVIA 2, PHYS 2A, MATH 71. Pre/Co-requisite: PHYS 2B Misc/Lab: Lecture 2 hours/Lab 3 hours.

AVIA 042 - Aircraft Systems

Operational and analytical aspects of key aircraft systems such as propulsion, flight control, electrical, and hydraulic. Reliability and maintainability concepts related to the design of aircraft systems. Emphasis is placed on general aviation aircraft. Prerequisite: AVIA 2, PHYS 2A Pre/Co-requisite: PHYS 2B Misc/Lab: Lecture 2 hours/lab 3 hours.

AVIA 062 - Instrument Pilot Ground

As the name implies, this course prepares students for their instrument flight rating.

Flight procedures, radio navigation, air traffic control, use of instrument charts. Flight simulator exercises on instrument flight maneuvers, departure and approach procedures. Prerequisite: AVIA 2.

AVIA 063 - Instrument Rating Part 141 Flight

Taken in conjunction with AVIA 062, this course is SJSU aviation's flying portion of the instrument flight rating training.

This course covers the FAA requirements leading up to the award of the FAA Instrument Rating Certificate. The course consists of 29 instrument flight training segments in an FAA approved FAR part 141 instrument flight training program. Prerequisite: Avia 003 or FAA Private Pilot Certificate, Avia 73

AVIA 068 - Avionics and Airborne Communication

Understanding how to effectively operate general aviation aircraft communication systems is integral in building the aeronautical knowledge necessary to become a professional pilot.

Communications and navigation systems installed on a typical general aviation aircraft. History of avionics. Laboratory exercises will include field-testing and airworthiness evaluation. Pre/corequisite: AVIA 42. Misc/Lab: Lecture 2 hours/lab 3 hours.

AVIA 073 - Air Traffic Control

Air Traffic Control System Structure and Communications. Current configuration and future design of the National Airspace System. Oceanic and International Air Traffic Control. Automation issues and Emerging Technologies. Prerequisite: AVIA 2.

AVIA 091 - Aircraft Turbine Engines

A study of gas turbine fundamentals, including various gas turbine cycles, components and component efficiency, thrust, specific fuel consumption, duct flow and inlet diffuser, centrifugal and axial compressors, combustion chambers and jet nozzles for aircraft propulsion. Prerequisite: AVIA 43.

AVIA 110 - Aviation Meteorology

Introduction to meteorology with emphasis on aviation applications. Causes of weather, characteristics of common weather phenomena and climatology. Aviation weather resources and reporting, and weather briefings in relation to visual and instrument meteorological conditions for flying

AVIA 112 - Commercial Pilot Ground

This course provides SJSU aviation students with the knowledge necessary to pursue their written commercial examination and checkride.

Material necessary for the FAA requirements leading up to the award of the FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate. Formatted as a ground school and covers the aeronautical knowledge requirements for the Commercial Pilot Knowledge Test. Prerequisite: Avia 31, Avia 42, Avia 91

AVIA 113 - Commercial Professional Pilot Part 141 Flight

This course covers the FAA requirements leading up to the award of the FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate. The course consists of 58 flight training segments in an FAA approved FAR part 141 flight training program. Prerequisite: FAA Private Pilot Certificate Co-requisite: AVIA 112

AVIA 176 - Airline Operations and Management

Aspects of managing air transportation companies. Integration of technical, environmental, market and regulatory considerations in the decision-making process in airline management. Future planning techniques. Prerequisite: AVIA 78

AVIA 193 - Aerodynamics

Fundamental to flight, understanding aerodynamics helps aviators understand the basics of flight.

Aerodynamic forces involved in an airplane in flight. Fundamental flowing gas, incompressible and compressible flow, Bernoulli's Principles, circulation forces, boundary layer, airfoils, measurement methods, laminar and turbulent flow, force and vortex interactions. Prerequisite: PHYS 2A, MATH 71, AVIA 31. Misc/Lab: Lecture 2 hours/Lab 3 hours.

AVIA 194 - Pilot Avionics and General Aviation Systems

Ever think about flying in a glass cockpit? This course builds on previous courses in its introduction to more complex avionics systems.

Operations of avionics as found on modern general aviation aircraft and turboprop/turbofan aircraft. Major systems used on general aviation aircraft including GPS, FMS, navigation systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, environmental systems, landing gear. Prerequisite: AVIA 42, AVIA 43.

SJSU Aviation - Minor

A minor in aviation is granted upon the completion of a coherent course of study and may be designed to fit the needs of a student from another major. The minor must include at least 12 units, six of which must be upper division. Six units must be completed in residence. Contact the department office (IS 111) for more details.

SJSU Aviation BS - Maintenance Management

The Maintenance Management option is a 2+2 program for students from community colleges. A community college student should be able to transfer almost all of their aviation maintenance courses and complete their BS degree requirements at SJSU in Maintenance Management.

SJSU Aviation BS - Aviation Management

The Aviation Management option prepares students to work at a public or private airport or a general aviation company.
